How Does This Locator Tool Work?

When you submit Form DS-82 or DS-11, federal intake scanning generates a 9-digit application number. The first two digits serve as the facility identifier for one of 29 regional passport centers (such as Locator 10 for Boston, Locator 55 for Dallas, or Locator 69 for Portsmouth). Our tool decodes these digits to show where your file is held and calculates when you can expect delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions About Locator Numbers

Where do I find my 9-digit application locator number?

Your 9-digit locator number is generated once the National Passport Processing Center opens your physical mailing envelope and scans your DS-11 or DS-82 form into the federal database. You can locate it directly on the official Department of State status lookup screen under the Application Locator Number heading, or in email notifications if you opted into status alerts.

What does it mean if my locator code starts with 69 or 79?

Locator 69 designates the National Passport Center (Portsmouth, NH), which is the largest passport adjudication facility in the United States handling high-volume routine and expedited mail applications. Locator 79 designates the Houston Passport Agency. Applications routed to these centers undergo centralized batch adjudication and automated book personalization.

Can I contact the regional agency directly if my travel date is approaching?

Regional federal passport centers do not accept direct unscheduled public phone calls. All applicant inquiries must be routed through the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) at 1-877-487-2778. If your travel is within 14 days and your file is already "In Process", an NPIC representative can submit an urgent processing request directly to the agency holding your file.
